SEO, GEO and AEO: what changes for your business?

Understand how SEO, GEO and AEO connect and where to start improving your business's organic visibility.

A magnifying glass, an AI answer bubble and a document connected by an orange pathway.

SEO works on search visibility. GEO considers discovery through generative answers. AEO structures useful answers to questions. In practice, these approaches share a foundation: accessible pages, trustworthy information and content that helps people decide.

What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It connects access to pages, site organization, content and the browsing experience with searches that matter to a business.

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is an industry term for work intended to make information understandable and potentially usable in AI answers. AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, describes the organization of clear answers to questions. These approaches overlap; the labels are not official ranking systems or certifications.

For SEO, ask whether a customer can find the right service page. For GEO, ask whether public sources explain the business accurately. For AEO, ask whether a specific question receives a useful answer.

A customer may use all three paths

Someone looking for fitted furniture might search for suppliers, ask an AI assistant how to compare materials, and visit a website to understand the quotation process. This is an illustrative journey, not a measured customer behavior.

A useful page explains project types, process and next steps, supported by original images and relevant evidence. A list of keywords leaves important decisions unanswered. Semantic search helps connect the customer's need, context and information.

What should you implement first?

My recommended sequence is:

  1. Check that important pages open correctly and are reachable through links.
  2. Explain services, intended customers, delivery scope and how to get in touch.
  3. Answer decision questions about process, criteria and limitations.
  4. Present identifiable authorship, original projects and sources for technical claims.
  5. Measure relevant queries, landing pages and qualified enquiries.

For AI features in Google Search, Google's documentation maintains foundational SEO practices and does not require a special AI file or markup. Read the official guidance. Optional tools should not be sold as ranking shortcuts.

Separate visibility from business results

Did a page appear, receive visits and contribute to useful enquiries? Success at one step does not prove success at the next. An AI citation may receive no click; a visit may generate no enquiry.

For Google searches, review queries and pages in Search Console. For AI observations, record the exact question, platform, date and cited URL. For the business, track enquiry origin and quality. The ChatGPT visibility guide explains this process.

A diagnosis of the current website is usually more useful than choosing a label first. Explore my organic visibility and website services to see how the work can fit together.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO replace SEO?

The practices overlap. Accessible pages, clear services and trustworthy information remain a useful foundation for search and AI discovery. Priorities should follow the business's actual problems.

Does an FAQ guarantee an appearance in an answer?

No. An FAQ is useful when it answers genuine customer questions. Neither an FAQ nor structured data guarantees a Google feature or an AI citation.
